Professional vs. Store-Bought Teeth Whitening: What Actually Works

By Smile Design Center | June 2026 | 5 min read

Walk down any drugstore aisle and you’ll find dozens of whitening strips, kits, and toothpastes claiming to give you a dazzling smile. With so many options, is it worth going to a dentist for professional whitening? Here’s an honest breakdown from our Las Vegas dental team.

How Teeth Whitening Works

All effective whitening products use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to bleach the enamel. The key variable is concentration. Over-the-counter products typically contain 3–10% peroxide. Professional in-office whitening uses 25–40% concentrations, often with a light or laser to accelerate the process.

Over-the-Counter Whitening: Honest Assessment

What works: Whitening strips (like Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects) can lighten teeth by 3–5 shades over 2–3 weeks with consistent use. They’re the best OTC option.

What doesn’t work: Whitening toothpastes mostly remove surface stains through mild abrasives — they don’t actually bleach enamel. Charcoal toothpastes are particularly ineffective and can be abrasive.

Downsides: OTC products can cause sensitivity with prolonged use, and one-size strips don’t fit everyone’s teeth properly, leading to uneven results.

Professional Whitening in Las Vegas: What to Expect

Professional in-office whitening at Smile Design Center delivers results that would take weeks with strips — in a single 60–90 minute appointment. Here’s what makes it different:

OTC Strips Professional (In-Office)
Results3–5 shades lighter6–10 shades lighter
Time2–3 weeks of daily use1 appointment (60–90 min)
SensitivityCan be high with overuseManaged with gel protection
Cost$30–$60$299–$499
Longevity3–6 months1–3 years with maintenance

Important: Whitening Doesn’t Work on Everything

Whitening (OTC or professional) only works on natural tooth enamel. It will not whiten crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding. If your smile has a mix of natural teeth and restorations, talk to us first — we may recommend veneers instead for more uniform results.
