Veneers vs. Crowns: Which Is Right for Your Las Vegas Smile?

By Smile Design Center | June 2026 | 5 min read

Two of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures are porcelain veneers and dental crowns. While both use porcelain and can dramatically improve your smile, they work very differently and are designed for different situations. Here’s how to know which one is right for you.

What Is a Dental Veneer?

A porcelain veneer is a wafer-thin shell (about 0.5mm) bonded to the front surface only of a tooth. It covers cosmetic imperfections while preserving most of your natural tooth. Veneers are minimally invasive — only a thin layer of enamel is removed to make room for the veneer.

Best for: chips, stains that don’t respond to whitening, gaps, slightly crooked teeth, uneven tooth length.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown (or cap) covers the entire tooth — all surfaces, not just the front. To place a crown, more tooth structure must be removed. Crowns are typically used when a tooth is structurally compromised and needs protection, not just cosmetic improvement.

Best for: cracked teeth, severely decayed teeth, teeth after root canals, large old fillings that need replacing, broken teeth.
